SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability has been defined at the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro as ‘meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’.

In our effort to protect and preserve what is around us, we have integrated sustainability into our hotel architecture and we have built using a “three-zero-concept” approach: using local construction materials and skills (zero kilometers), prioritizing energy management and lower emissions (zero carbon dioxide) and supplying the property with furniture, fixture and equipment that are environmentally-friendly and eco-certified (zero production cost).
Towards building more sustainably and decreasing our environmental footprint, we followed the practices described underneath:

Architecturally
    • We adopted bioclimatic construction rules seeking to reduce to the minimum, the use of heating and air conditioning systems.

Furniture, Fixture and Equipment
    • Our ceramic sanitary is from Catalano, a leading industry Italian company with certifications that guarantee environmental control of product life cycles in compliance with rigorous international standards.
    • Our mattresses come from Simmons which produce comfortable, luxury and innovative mattresses made of eco-friendly and recyclable materials.
    • Our pillow menu offers pillows made of natural and recyclable materials.
    • Our linen are produced from 100% fine cotton.

Energy Conservation
    • We covered all the building with thermal insulation thus saving energy up to 50% for cooling and heating purposes.
    • We invested in a high efficiency heating and cooling system with a solar panel roof which can produce hot water for almost 24hrs and serve as a great heating source in the cold season.
    • We have installed an automated energy management system that includes smart metering and 24hrs energy consumption monitoring.
    • We have installed smart guestroom thermostats in all our Suites that are designed to control lighting and room temperature.
    • We use key cards needed for room power.
    • We use low-consumption illumination LED bulbs for maximum energy saving.
    • We have installed sensor-based lights at the common areas.
    • We have developed energy conservation plans with specific tactics for operating optimally including topics like lighting schedules.

Water Conservation
    • We implement the linen and towel reuse program in order to reduce the use of water, energy and detergents.
    • All our planting has been carefully chosen to provide the necessary aesthetics but also requires low frequency and quantity of watering.

Recycling and Reducing Waste
    • While variability in municipal infrastructure presents challenges, we strive to reduce waste and increase recycling rates.
    • We use soap dispensers in public WCs.

Bath Amenities
    • We co-operate with APIVITA cosmetics that combines naturally derived active ingredients, extracts from plants of the Greek nature, beehive products of high nutritional value and organic essential oils.  APIVITA’s formulations contain 85-100% natural ingredients which do not contain silicones, parabens, mineral oil, propylene glycol, polycyclic musks, nitromusks, phthalates, as well as other ingredients that have been associated with adverse effects on health or the environment.

Cleaning Products
    • We recognize the importance of safer products for guests and employees as well as the environment, therefore we use cleaning products that are environmentally friendly.  By using these cleaning agents, we are reducing the use of products with chlorine bleach and petrochemical derivatives.  These more natural products are less irritating to guests and employees and less destructive to the environment.

Building a Culture of Environmental Awareness
    • The basics are just as important for making an impact.  Through training, we prompt our staff to reiterate the importance of simple steps such as turning off faucets while cleaning and pre-heating kitchen oven only when needed.
    • We respect the natural surroundings both in social and natural terms.  This means not contaminating and respecting the local culture.

Local Economy
    • We contribute to the community´s development by supporting local businesses.
    • We promote the consumption of local and ecologic products.
We believe that there is an increasing need for businesses to become economically, socially and environmentally responsible as our continued existence is reliant on our environment.

The sustainable business practices are at the core of our daily routine and by adhering to them we protect the very reason why guests come in the first place.
